Error from Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Exchange Server (MS SBS 2003)

A local user is attempting to email to a user on a remote domain and the email is rejected with t he following
error:-

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

user@123abc.com on 12/09/08 12:00 PM

The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.

You must have your exchange server configured, in Recipient Policies, that it is responsible for delivery to the domain 123abc.com, as per your example.

If so, this is the reason, when a local exchange user sends to that same domain, exchange checks your active directory for that user, and if that user is at another of your company sites and not in your active directory, the lookup fails and exchange looks no further.

Easiest way to resolve this, without making custom recipients for everybody in your branch sites, is in exchange system manager / First Administrative Group / Servers / Your Server / Protocols / SMTP / Default SMTP virtual server / Properties, go to the Messages tab and fill in 'forward all mail with unresolved recipients to host:' with your ISP mail server
