Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003

These are the steps I used to restore back to original server.
Overview
1. Install Windows SBS and apply any service pack for the Windows Server® 2003 operating system that existed on your server when you ran the last backup.
2. Restore the server from backup media.
3. Verify the success of the restore and rejoin client computers to the network.

Steps to take
    Install OS and Service Pack
  • Disconnect any external USB disk
  • Insert Disk 1 of SBS Server 2003 set
  • Welcome Screen press Enter
  • Windows Licensing press F8
  • Select Partition to restore (must have same drive letter as prior to restore
  • Select NTFS
  • Server restarts
  • regional and Language settings
  • Personalize your software
  • Your Product key
  • Enter administrator password use same as on the backup
  • Verify Date Time
  • Install the Service Pack that was on the server at the last backup.
    To restore the server from backup media
  • Am restoring from External Disk drive use Disk Management to configure drives exactly as before restore
  • Check Service pack on server matches that on backup
  • logon using administrator password
  • Cancel the continuing Setup page
  • Start Run ntbackup
  • Advanced Mode
  • Tools Options Restore
  • Tick Always replace the file on my computer
  • Right click File in Details Pane, click Catalog File, browse to the file for the restore
  • To restore your hard disks and system state, select the check boxes for the drives you want to restore and the system state. Do not check Microsoft Information Store
  • Under Restore files to, make sure that Original location is selected.
  • On the Restore and Manage Media tab, click Start Restore.
  • In the Warning dialog box, click OK.
  • In the Confirm Restore dialog box, click Advanced.
    • On the Advanced Restore Options page, ensure that the following four check boxes are selected:
    • Restore security.
    • Restore junction points, and restore file and folder data under junction points to the original location.
    • When restoring replicated data sets, mark the restored data as the primary data for all replicas.
    • Preserve existing volume mount points.
  • Click OK, and then click OK again.
  • Remove the Windows SBS CD from Drive
  • When the restore is complete, click Report to verify that the system state and all files were recovered.
  • In the Backup Utility dialog box, click Yes to restart the server, and then log on.
  • Note! After you restart your computer, there may be a Continue Setup icon on your desktop. Delete this icon if it is present.
  • If you have SBS 2003 Premium you may need to configure the firewall in ISA server to allow client access.
    Goto Control Panel, Add Remove Programs an select ISA Server 2004 and change/remove and select repair.
    In SBS 2003 Standard you can use the Routing and Remote Access or Windows Firewall.
