Windows Server 2003 fails on drvmain.sdb

Postby stephen » Thu Jan 04, 2007 5:59 am

I have a MS Small Business Server with mirrored disks. in a SATA Raid 1 config using the motherboard raid controller.

I had just completed a Microsoft Windows Update on a MS Small Business Server 2003 server.
On restart the server performed a chkdsk on the disk
The chkdsk aborted with
an unspecified error occurred

I powered off then on the server

Now on booting the boot shows the Windows 2003 logo but stops booting and restarts.

I used the F8 key to get into boot menu
I tried starting in last known good configuration
no change
I tried starting in safe mode and it stops at the loading of
AppPatch\drvmain.sdb
and then reboots
I have found many suggestions at this web site:
http://www.windows-now.com/blogs/mrusso/archive/2004/02/02/2319.aspx

Microsoft have a knowledgebase article 325375 on
How to troubleshoot startup problems in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/325375

My Solution.
I turned off the motherboard raid.
Disconnected the master and slave disks.

I took a new disk, installed MS Server 2003 on this disk.
shutdown

Then took the original master disk and connected it as a 2nd disk booted off the new disk.
When the server started up it performed a chkdsk on the original server master disk.
There were lots of errors found and were fixed.
Shutdown the server.
Removed the new disk.
I connected the master disk and slave disk in the server and turned on the raid and made the slave rebuild to the master.

The server started successfully.
