Using USB Backup Disks

Postby stephen » Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:40 pm

When a USB Backup disk is used on a server.
If the Partition created on the backup disk is a Primary Partition then the server will try to boot off the USB backup disk and fail as it will see the USB disk as the C: drive and try to boot from it.

To prevent the server from inadvertently booting from the USB disk.

Use the Disk Manager to Delete the Primary Partition on the USB disk and then Create an Extended Partition on the USB disk.
Also format the partition as a NTFS volume otherwise the backup will fail when the size of the backup file reaches 4 Gigabytes.

I also found that on some servers you need to have the USB disk connected and powered on, then go into BIOS settings and change the hard disk boot ordder so that the Hard drive appears before the USB disk. (This must be done with the USB disk connected and powered on).
