Exchange server not delivering emails to external recipients

Users are getting this error:-

The SMTP connector on the exchange server was sending all email to mail.bigpond.com
seems like the bigpond system has changed and is not accepting the emails.
Fix was to delete the SMTP connector
and modify the Default SMTP protocol to attempt delivery directly first then send through the ISP if direct delivery fails.
