Vista Service Pack 1 fails to install

Postby stephen » Sun Aug 31, 2008 10:00 pm

During the process of installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1
the Toshiba Satellite A200 PC failed to reboot
and shows a black screen with this message flickering.
!! 0xc0190036 !! 2612/75391 (SearchProtocolHost.exe)

Laptop has 1 Gb Ram
105Gb free space on a 160Gb Hard Disk
Trend PC-cillin Internet Security 2007

Steps to resolve

1. Power Off PC
2. Select Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)
gets to a screen saying attempting repairs
then a screen to Select a System Restore from a previous restore point.
3. Select to Restore to a previous restore point
4. After some time you get a message click Finish to restart your computer.

The PC restarts and is back to the Pre Service Pack 1 state.
If you try to reinstall Vista Service Pack 1 the same problem happens.

Next step is to ask Microsoft for their free Vista Service Pack 1 install help.

Microsoft responded with
This behavior may occur if SearchProtocolHost.exe is corrupted.

To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we first perform these steps:

Rebuild Index
================
1. Click on the Start Button, type "Indexing Options" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter.
2. Click the "Advanced" button.
(Click "Continue" if User Account Control prompts for permission.)
3. Click on the "Index Settings" tab.
4. Under Troubleshooting, click the "Rebuild" button.

Note: Indexing speed can be reduced due to this activity. The index will be unavailable and will not be rebuilt until indexing is restored.

Disable the Window Search service
========================
1. Click on the Start Button, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter.
(Click "Continue" if User Account Control prompts for permission)
2. Right click the service "Windows Search" and click "Stop".
3. Check if the performance is improved.

After that, please install the SP1 again.
If the issue persists, please collect the following information for further research:

System Information
==============
The System Information can provide us with more information about the current status of the system. I would like to check it for you. Please send it to me using the following steps:
1. Click "Start", type "MSINFO32" in the Search Bar and press Enter to start the System Information.
2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose NFO as "Save as type", click “Desktop” on the left pane, and click Save.
3. Right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

Collect CBS.log
===========
1. Please click "Start", double click to open Local Disk C:, browse to the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" folder, right click on CBS.log and choose "Copy".

2. Right click on the free space of Desktop, choose "Paste".

When the User Account dialog box pops up, please click "Continue" if necessary.

3. Right-click on CBS.log on the desktop, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

I did the above and ended back with the same error in my next attempt to install Vista Service Pack1

Shalley,
I have followed the steps you provided and attempted another install of Service Pack 1

The install stops at a black screen with this message

!! 0xc01900036 !! 2612/75391 (SearchProtocolHost.exe)

The above message seems to flicker as it is being redisplayed.

I will have to do a restore to the previous state to get the files your requested.
