Vista very slow startup

Postby stephen » Thu Jan 15, 2009 6:10 am

These are sites with suggestions regarding the slow startup of Vista
Things to check.
Look in task manager for running programs and disk activity.
Check Control Panel | Indexing Options and
see if it says "Indexing complete", or that it is "reduced due to user
activity", or similar language. Indexing is SUPPOSED to work in the
background and be almost unnoticed - and it does, AFTER it finishes building
the initial Index.

VISTA SLOW BOOTUP FIXED
by googxmsr - 03/09/08 21:17 In reply to: is it vista compatible by ict-cramps

using vista home premium on new hp dual core 2gb ram laptop.

msconfig -> services -> hide all microsoft services -> uncheck these if they exist: xaudio, vongo, stllsvr,roxmediad89, installdriver table manager, cyberlink background, cyberlink task,

Then click on boot tab ->advanced options -> number of processors 2 -> maximum memory.

I went from 2 min to 15 seconds bootup doing this.

Slow Starup
by idzyn4u22 - 07/02/07 19:47 In reply to: Vista Slow Startup problem by idzyn4u22

I found if I disable SERVER from the Startup sequence my system startup up with no issues. I then run SERVICES.msc and start the SERVER program and the system runs perfectly fine.

What is the issue with the SERVER program at startup and what can be done to get it to start up normally in the Boot sequence?

Hi Panchai,

Thank you for the post.

Generally, the slow performance issue can be caused by the following factors:
1. Third-party programs conflicts.
2. Viruses infection.
3. Hardware limitations.

First please check the Vista system requirements on the following site. (These are the minimum requirements. If you would like to run Vista more smoothly, you may need to enhance the hardware)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... ments.mspx

Based on the current situation, let's test the issue in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:
===================
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu.
2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.
3. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account or any user account with the Administrator privileges.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer.

Does the computer run slowly in Safe Mode?

If not, the issue is likely caused by third-party programs. Let’s perform a Clean Boot to make a further check.
Perform a Clean Boot:
==================

1. Click Start, type MSCONFIG in the Search Bar and Press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility.
Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
2. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).
3. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All and click OK.
4. Restart the computer and test the result.

Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can enable them on later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the "Don't show this message" box and then click OK.

Does the computer run faster now?
Hope it helps.
Best regards,

Tim Quan

Google any startup entries to find out if they are necessary or not but basically all you need is antivirus, 3rd party firewall, antispyware and that's about all. No programs, soundcards etc... are necessary to be run in msconfig.
