SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 Migration issues

1. DCPromo failed to make the new server a DC during the installation process,
When you get the timeout message, go to your SBS 2003 server and modify the registry setting in the SBS 2003 server and then hit Y to retry.
This was fixed by changing the 2003 registry setting
the fix was to
1. Stop the ntfres service on SBS2003
net stop ntfrs
3. run regedit
change Burflags to D4 in this part of the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NtFrs\Parameters\Backup/Restore\Process at Startup:
Change the value of "BurFlags" to D4 in hex.
3. Start the ntfrs service
net start ntfrs

2. Older software would not connect to the new 2008 domain controller
I had an OPTIOFAX Fax server and it would not login to the Server 2008 as a Primary Domain Controller. The fix was found by turning on "Allow cryptography algorithms compatible with Windows NT 4.0" Then restarting the domain controller.
See for NT 4 domain compatibility

If you cannot install software updates because a service outage will occur, follow these steps:

1. Log on to a Windows Server 2008-based domain controller.
2. Click Start, click Run, type gpmc.msc, and then click OK.
3. In the Group Policy Management console, expand Forest: DomainName, expand DomainName, expand Domain Controllers, right-click Default Domain Controllers Policy, and then click Edit.
4. In the Group Policy Management Editor console, expand Computer Configuration, expand Policies, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, click Net Logon, and then double-click Allow cryptography algorithms compatible with Windows NT 4.0.
5. In the Properties dialog box, click the Enabled option, and then click OK.

I also found that the older software would only log in if i temporarily disabled the network adapter on the Domain server. Then Enabled the adapter. Now I can get the optiofax software running on Windows 2000 server to log into the Windows 2008 Domain.
