Application Compatibility with Windows Server 2008 AD

Postby stephen » Thu May 14, 2009 6:35 pm

We have migrated to a Windows 2008 SBS server from a Windows 2003 SBS Server.
We are now having issues with some custom application software that runs in Windows 2000 servers, These programs look for return codes when they login to the domain and these have chaged and t.

This software Optiofax and Optio e.ComIntegrate is designed to log into the Domain at start up.

The problem is that the domain login now returns a different response from the previous 2003 Domain COntroller

The OptioFax Server gives this error
05/14 18:15:56:335 fxapis( 1576): NetServerEnum failed. (71). Could not contact PDC.
or
05/14 18:37:55:164 fxapis( 2068): Could not contact PDC. No valid PDC name returned from OS
05/14 18:37:55:164 fxapis( 2068): Fax directory will be: C:\PROGRA~1\Optio\OPTIOF~1\spool.
05/14 18:37:55:195 fxapis( 2068): OptioFAX API Server started.

and
05/14 18:16:09:273 CHhndl( 1928): Error: Domain list is empty.
05/14 18:16:09:273 CHhndl( 1928): Error: Unable to intialize domain list. Error: [0]

Then when the fax client tries to login we get
05/14 18:34:18:445 fxclnt( 2192): Error: timeout in comm read: Return -1
05/14 18:34:18:445 fxclnt( 2192): Error: Unable to read list flag.
05/14 18:34:18:445 fxclnt( 2192): Error: Unable to read domain list.

Solution:
Solution 1.
(I tried Solution 2 but did not work) So I tried this,
Restart the Domain Controller
wait for a minute
right click on the 2nd network adapter select disable
wait for prompt to appear asking permission
now restart the Optiofax service on the server running Optiofax
check the fxapi.log to see if it logs into the domain successfully

Solution 2.
I found a work around solution.
My Server has 2 network adapters
If I disable the main network adapter and leave the 2nd adapter enabled
I can get the OPTIOFAX to login to the SERVER 2008 domain controller.

Sometimes I can get the OPTIOFAX to login immediately after I restart the SERVER 2008 domain controller.

1. On the Domain Controller disable the network Adapters for a short time.
2. Now enable the network adapters on the Domain Controller.
3. Now on the Windows 2000 Server running the OptioFax restart the OptioFax Server
Service, you will find that it will login to the Domain controller successfully
4. Start the Optiofax client program on the Windows 2000 server and click the login and it should log in to the domain correctly.
5. keep the server running as long as you can as you will have to repeat the above if you have to make the OptioFax server to connect to the Domain Controller after a restart.

I have also changed the cryptography settings not sure if this helped or not
"Allow cryptography algorithms compatible with Windows NT 4.0"

Solution 4 ( I use this one now)
On the Login server
goto Services
and restart Active Directory Domain Services
on the Fax Server PC
Restart the server running the OptioFax server
and Log In again
Then check the optio fax log
C:\Program Files\Optio\OptioFAX Server\etc\fxapi.log
it should show
Code: Select all
12/11 05:38:21:101 fxapis(  1656): fxapis 4.0.8 02/2003
12/11 05:38:21:101 fxapis(  1656): License path is C:\PROGRA~1\Optio\OPTIOF~1\license\license.dat.
12/11 05:38:21:335 fxapis(  1656): Licensed users: 20; Expiration date: 1-jan-00.
12/11 05:38:21:335 fxapis(  1656): Trace level: 3
12/11 05:38:21:367 fxapis(  1656): Server is running on domain MYDOMAIN.
12/11 05:38:21:429 fxapis(  1656): Fax directory will be: C:\PROGRA~1\Optio\OPTIOF~1\spool.
12/11 05:38:21:695 fxapis(  1656): OptioFAX API Server started.

         OptioFAX API Server running at Host[MYSERVER : 10.0.2.6] Port[65000]

Now start the OptioFAX program and attempt to login.
If it fails to login just exit OptioFAX and start it again
and the login should work. ( Someimes it takes some time before the OptioFAX server has started and is ready for client connections)
