Hyper-V Win2000 Green Screen at startup

Postby stephen » Tue Oct 27, 2009 12:00 am

I have a Windows 2000 Virtual Machine, when the Win2000 Server Virtual Machine was restarted it just showed a Green screen.
reseting the Virtual Machine the startup would stop at the green screen and go no further.

Reset the VM session
Press F8 at boot up
Select Safe Mode
I can now log in to the safe mode server

I look at the event viewer application log and find
Many of the services fail to start because of
A device attached to the system is not functioning which implies the network adapter

I shut-down and restart the Windows 2000 server from the Safe Mode
The settings for the network adapter in the Virtual Machine show that it is using the legacy network adapter and is connected to the External network
The server is booting up in normal mode.
again the Windows 2000 server does not start just stops at the green screen.

I restart the Windows 2000 VM, stop the VM at reboot , File Settings and change the Legacy Network Adapter to Not Connected, then start the VM
again the Windows 2000 server does not start just stops at the green screen.

I restart the VM and select Safe Mode with Networking I can login to the Server in safe mode
I click File Settings and change the Legacy Network Adapter to External
I check I can browse network to other servers via this network
I click Start Shutdown and Restart the VM server
again the Windows 2000 server does not start just stops at the green screen.

I reset the win2000 VM server and at startup press F8 and select Last Known Good Configuration as the startup menu option
again the Windows 2000 server does not start just stops at the green screen.

I selected to restart the host server
When I restart the host server the network is not working on the host server.

I shutdown the host server. and power off the server.
On startup of the host server the Windows 2000 VM server starts up in the Hyper-V and is running normally.

The Windows 2000 Server failed to start in the Hyper-V Virtual Machine because it had an old High Point Raid controller driver configured in the Service Control Manager and this driver is not used any more,
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7026
Description: the following boot-start driver(s) failed to load: hptpro

To delete the driver Once I managed to get the server started I went to a Command Prompt and I ran
Code: Select all
scm -Action 4 -Service hptpro
