Cannot log into Windows Server 2008 Standard

Cannot log into Windows Server 200
The screen is just blue and no desktop appears.

I have a Intel Modular Server which has three physical servers installed. One of the servers is running MS Windows 2008 64 bit and it has an issue where we cannot log onto the server either at the Console or via RDP. After the login and password is entered the login process just hangs.

When I try and login as a user. I get the message
Please wait for the user profile service. Then the screen changes with the Windows Server 2008 details at the bottom of the screen. Then it just hangs.

As an administrator you just see a blue screen and the words
Windows Server 2008 Standard at the bottom of the screen.

This server is also running Virtual Servers and they are running fine just cannot log into the host server.

In order to get to a login screen to apply the hotfix I have to reset the server and then login as soon as it is rebooted. As you have no access to a login session.

Microsoft have a hotfix KB959125
The User Profile Service (ProfSvc) crashes in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista SP1 systems when the service loads or unloads user profiles that contain compressed files or folders

Another user reports Windows 2008 x64 Server freezes
they suggest this Microsoft Hotfix will fix the problem. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/961775

I have had this exact same problem but with SBS 2008sp1, x64 and after dealing with MS support, managed to resolve it.

Here are the relevant details from my experience with this issue:

Hardware:
- HP ML350 G5
- 10Gb Ram
- SBS 2008 SP1
- Exchange 2007 SP1, Update Rollup 6 (v08.01.0340.000)
- HP ProLiant Support Pack 8.20
- HP Firmware Maintenance 8.40

Symptoms:
- New RDP Sessions and console logins hang at "Welcome" with the moving circle.
- Unable to logoff existing RDP sessions and/or console logins - hangs.
- Filesharing, RWW and OWA are still working however inbound and outbound email is not working and we can't connect to computer's from RWW.
- In the still opened RDP Session I can run things like 'cmd' and 'Windows Explorer', but was not able to launch any MMC snap-in - these windows just hang.
- Event Logs show a gap from the time the server was unresponsive til the power was reset - despite the FileSharing, RWW and OWA working while the server is un-responsive.
- The only way to get past this is a power reset.

An average response from HP Support said: "Your firmware maintenance version is much too old. Please install HP Firmware Maintenance CD v8.50 and see if this works".

MS Partner Support were great and responded saying: "This issue is being caused by your server using a network card driver that utilizes TDI"

MS Partner Support referenced the following blog article and MS KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/961775

Installing the hotfix from the MS KB above resolved the issue for me.

Hope this helps everyone else.

Seems like 'jrhoukes' was on the right track.
