DNS failing Windows 2000

DNS failing Windows 2000

Postby stephen » Sat Oct 25, 2008 5:59 pm

Issues:-
1. TCP/IP cannot retrieve an IP Address for the adapter from the DHCP Server
2. ipconfig /renew fails with an error
"An operation was attempted on something that was not a socket"

3. Manually setting an ip address allows you to ping a ip number on the internet
4. Web pages cannot display because the DNS is not working to resolve the web URL addresses

I can manually set the ip address of the network adapter
but I cannot get a response when ping a domain name address eg ping http://www.google.com does not resolve the ip address of google
but I can get a reply when ping a remote ip number eg ping 203.222.88.109

If I set the adapter to obtain a IP Address from the DHCP server
When I try ipconfig /renew
receive this error
"An operation was attempted on something that was not a socket"

Soloution found at http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-237048.php
1. Delete the following registry keys
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2
2. Remove the Internet protocol for the Local Area Network
3. Restart the PC
4. Reinstall the Internet Protocol for the Local Area Network
5. Restart the PC
6. Uninstall and Reinstall the Antivirus program if it has a firewall component

If this was Windows XP I would right click on the Local Area Connection under Network Connections and select Repair

If none of that works or is possible, you could try this method
for replacing the winsock and winsock2 registry keys:

Uninstall any third-party proxy software or firewall programs before proceeding.

Step 1: Delete registry keys

A)Open Regedit from the Run line (Start > Run - regedit)

B)Go to both of the following keys, EXPORT each of them, and then delete them:
(To export a key, you right click on it and choose "export" - you can choose where to export them to -
DESKTOP is handy -
and you need to type in a file name such as "exported Winsock key" / "exported WinSock2 key"
and then click on SAVE)

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

C)Restart the computer

NOTE: It is important to restart the computer after deleting the Winsock keys.
Doing so causes the XP operating system to recreate shell entries for those two
keys. If this is not done, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP on top of itself

Go to Control Panel | Network Connections

A)Open the properties window of the network connection (Local Area Connection)
B)Click Install
C)Click Protocol, then Add
D)Click Have Disk
E)Type the path to the \%systemroot%\inf folder (usually C:\Windows\inf) and click OK
(if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder,
it may not show up in the list)
F)You should now see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list of available
protocols. Select it and click OK.
G)Restart the computer

Actually, there are a couple of useful commands, that's one of them.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
