Symantec Internet Security 2009 - NIS 2009 hangs

I tried removing it by booting into safe mode
and deleting all the files in TEMP folders and
removing the program from the RUN area in the registry
The program seems to have gone.
Then I have installed NIS 2009 and now when the computer starts up it runs extremely slow and appears to just hang.
I can boot into safe mode and the PC functions in safe mode.

I had to download the Norton daily update file ( Iused another computer connected to internet)

I installed the update file on the infected computer.
Started it in safe mode and ran the NIS virus scan
The scan detected numerous Trojans and the XP AntiSpyware 2009 and says that the infections have been removed.
