Windwos XP No Audio Device found

In WIndows XP there is no sound and there is No Audio Device Found
In
the sound management interface (in control panel -> sounds) it reports "no audio device".

Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services/Services. Make sure Windows Audio is enabled. Mine was somehow previously disabled so I when I changed that, EVERYTHING worked just fine.
or
Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
find Windows Audio and make sure it is enabled and Startup is set to Automatic
click on Start to start the Windows Audio

Solution found here:

Another solution would be to use System Restore to restore to a time when the sound was working.
all you need to do is go to the start menu
go to accessories
click on system tools
and go to system restore
then go to the day when your speakers were properly working
